The 1st of many symptoms of faulty gas caps is probably going to be a gas cap that is loose or a gas cap that will not tighten completely. This may seem insignificant at first, but if it’s not fully sealed then the fuel system can be contaminated with dirt and grime. If the gas cap is not closing properly, try checking the rubber gasket to be sure it isn’t brittle or missing. If you own an old car or truck, make sure the metal gas cap is not bent or damaged. Both can lead to the gas cap issues and might even require purchasing a replacement from the manufacturer.
What problems can a non-secure gas cap cause? How about a check engine light? A non-secure gas cap will not only let in grime and dirt, but it can allow fuel vapors to escape the gas tank. These gasoline vapors may produce errors in the emissions system, which would cause the check engine light to come on.
